This Blog's Focus, or lack there of

Edith Wharton said "There are two ways of spreading light ...To be the candle, or the mirror that reflects it." That's what this blog is about, how the light of other people and the world around me have reflected off and in me. . .or other things when I need to write about other things, like walking, lizards, or fruit. There will be pictures of plants. All pictures are taken by me, unless noted.

I say what's on my mind, when it's there, and try to only upload posts that won't hurt or offend readers. However, readers may feel hurt or offended despite my good intentions. Blog-reading is a matter of free choice, that's what I have come to love about it, so if you are not pleased, surf on and/or leave a comment. I welcome any and all kind-hearted commentary.

It's 2012 and my current obsessions are writing and walking, sometimes at the same time. And books. I'm increasingly fascinated by how ebooks are transforming the physical book, forcing it to do more than provide printed words on a page.

Falling Off. . .Crawling Back On

I set up regular tasks for myself in an attempt to keep me focused because I am easily distracted and I admire focus in others. It will be a task that seems reasonable at the time, a challenge but not impossible, but once I fall off the routine I'm done for, usually. At the start there is a lot of good feelings, look at me, I'm focused! I've got a routine! Then I miss a beat, and then another, and my pats on the back switch to smacks in the back of the head. See, you lack conviction. Might as well give up. Another failed attempt at accomplishing something.

Case in point. . .almost. . .this blog. I scheduled 2 blogs per weeks for a year. Simple enough, but by the end of March I couldn't keep it going. So I've been contemplating letting it go, but I've enjoyed the freedom of this kind of writing and don't want to call the patient yet.

Maybe it's Spring.
Maybe it's my conditioning as a teacher, I work in semester blocks.
Maybe I am easily distracted and can't write about my female heroes for the whole year.
Maybe the idea was too contrived in the first place.

I'll keep writing while I figure it out. For now, here's the first poppies in my garden.
